In 2013 V.I.Shumakov Federal Research Center of Transplantology and Artificial Organs performed 102 heart transplantations. This is the first time in Russia and more than any other clinic in the world.
More than in other European and US clinics living-related liver transplantations in children, including in those of the earliest age and with very low birth weight are carried out.
A unique program of liver and kidney transplantation from donors with incompatible blood types is being implemented.
Preclinical trials of bioartificial liver – tissue-engineered liver cells and biodegradable matrix structure created in the Center and intended for the treatment of acute and chronic liver failure are being conducted.
In May 2013 the First Russian National Congress on Transplantation and organ donation was held.
