Sergey V. Gautier

Director

Director, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Transplantologist of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation, Head of Chair of transplantation and artificial organs of I.M.Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Chairman of the All-Russian public organization “Russian Transplant Society”, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor.

Sergey V. Gautier was born in a family of highly educated and progressive people of Russia. His grandfather Yuri Gauthier was director of the library of the Rumyantsev Museum, head of the history department of Moscow State University, academician, full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Grand great-grandfather of S.V.Gautier - Eduard V. Gauthier-Dufayet, known physician, worked in the First City Hospital of Moscow, the audience in which students of Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University are trained was named after him.

Father - Vladimir Y. Gautier (1911-1994) was a forensic expert, colonel of medical service.

Mother – Nina P. Pyrlina (1916-2010) was Associate Professor of the Department of forensic medicine of I.M.Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

A distinguished physician and a prominent scientist, S.V.Gautier was at the forefsront of development of liver transplantation in Russia. He is one of the surgeons who carried out the first orthotopic liver transplantation in Russia and is now known as a leading expert of the Russian Federation in the field of transplantation. S.V.Gauthier performed the first successful transplants of complex "heart-lung", multiorgan transplantations (liver and kidney, liver and pancreas), pancreas transplants, the first related transplants of liver fragments.

To date S.V.Gauthier has gained the largest in the country personal experience in performing orthotopic liver transplantation, including on the children of the first months of life. S.V.Gaultier's important merit is the organization of the transplant care to a pediatric contingent of patients previously receiving similar care exclusively abroad. Over the years S.V.Gautier has been exploring how to optimize the quality of transplanted donor organs, adaptation of the donor organ in the recipient’s body, the recipient’s immune response to transplantation of various organs and their complexes, pathophysiological aspects of reperfusion injury of the transplanted liver, etc. S.V.Gautier has scientifically proved and introduced into clinical practice the algorithms of examination, preparation and rehabilitation of related organ donors. His research interests include working on biological and clinical problems of transplantation of vital organs, regenerative medicine issues and creation of bioartificial organs. The main research focuses on orthotopic liver transplantation as a way of treatment for end-stage diffuse and focal liver diseases, pancreas transplantation under diabetes mellitus type II; relative donation and transplantation of liver fragments, donor transplantations to children; simultaneous transplantation of organ complexes; adaptation of the transplanted organ in the recipient, devising ways to minimize graft ischemic injury, the role of biomarkers in the immunological interaction between the transplanted organ and the recipient's body, prediction and treatment of transplant rejection, ensuring long-term survival of the graft in the recipient; biological aspects of immune tolerance, prevention of infections in transplantation; developing of biohybrid bioartificial liver, etc.

S.V.Gauthier is the author of more than 550 scientific papers; 22 books, monographs and manuals on transplantation, surgery, gastroenterology, hepatology, etc., 15 copyright certificates and patents for inventions. His published books “Liver transplant”, “Essays in clinical transplantation”, “Infections in transplantation”, “Immunosuppression in solid organ transplantation”, 4 volumes of “Transplantology: results and prospects” edition (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) are of particular relevance to the science and practice.

S.V.Gauthier is the leader of his own scientific school and gives a great deal of effort and energy to the education of personnel. Under the leadership of S.V.Gauthier 8 doctor's and 14 candidate's theses were defended. S.V.Gautier is an experienced and effective organizer and an active public figure. He is chief specialist-transplantologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Scientific Council on the complex problem of medicine "Transplantology and artificial organs" of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Commission of the Expert Committee of RAMS on modernization and innovative development in the field of transplantation and artificial organs. S.V.Gautier is Chairman of the All-Russian public organization of transplantologists "Russian Transplant Society”, a board member of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association of CIS countries, the Editor-in-Chief of the "Journal of Transplantation and Artificial Organs", member of the editorial boards of Russian and foreign journals - "Annals of Surgical Hepatology», «Annals of Transplantation», etc. S.V.Gautier is award winner of the prize of the Government of the Russian Federation; First National Award nominee to the best doctors in Russia "The Calling" for performing of related liver transplantation, award winner of the "Russian of the Year" prize, award winner of "The Calling" prize for performing of pancreas transplantation, national award to the best doctors of Russia "The Fame", an international medal "World’s Outstanding Surgeon" holder, "Profession - Life", Theodore Billroth international medal holder, "N.I.Pirogov Grand Gold Medal", etc. S.V.Gautier has achieved brilliant successes in scientific and practical activities and that, along with his great erudition, innovation, breadth of scientific interests and talent of surgeon advanced academician of RAS, professor S.V.Gautier to the circle of prominent doctors and scientists of our time.
